In June 1994, the military base that had been in operation for almost a decade was withdrawn from the district of Marcas, in the province of Angaraes. This withdrawal took place in the context of a significant decrease in subversive activity after the capture of Abimael Guzmán in 1992 and the subsequent peace accords. The military base had been installed in the area as part of the counter-subversive strategy in Angaraes, one of the provinces most affected by political violence. The withdrawal marks the end of the permanent military presence in the district after years of internal armed conflict.
