Presentation of repentants in Tingo Maria
More than two thousand militants of the PCP-SL took refuge in the law of repentance at the Tingo Maria barracks between February 27 and April 4, 1994. This massive process of desertions was crucial for the subsequent counter-subversive Operation Aries.
Between February 27 and April 4, 1994, in little more than a month, more than two thousand repentants presented themselves at the Tingo Maria barracks. This massive phenomenon of repentance occurred in the context of the counter-subversive offensive in Alto Huallaga, after the capture of important Shining Path leaders such as Viajero, Rayo and Pescador in January 1994. The testimonies of these repentants were fundamental for the planning and execution of Operation Aries. The number of PCP-SL combatants reportedly decreased drastically from 1050 to 360 military cadres between January 1992 and October 1993.
