Hiking excursion in Balcón y Picota

In February 1994, a Shining Path column raided the villages of Balcón and Picota as they attempted to enter the district of Santo Domingo. This event occurred in the context of Shining Path's final actions in the province of Angaraes, Huancavelica. The incursion occurred after the area had experienced years of intense violence, including multiple massacres and confrontations between law enforcement, peasant patrols and subversive groups. By 1994, violence in the region was already on the decline following the capture of Abimael Guzman in 1992.
