Incursion in Balcón and Picota
Incursion of a Shining Path column in the villages of Balcón and Picota, Santo Domingo, in February 1994, during the final period of the internal armed conflict.
In February 1994, a Shining Path column raided the villages of Balcón and Picota, located in the district of Santo Domingo. This event occurred in a context of declining subversive activity, after the capture of Abimael Guzmán in 1992 and the 1993 peace accords. Subversive activity was so low at that time that in June 1994 the Military Base in the district of Marcas, which had operated for almost a decade in the province of Angaraes, was withdrawn.
