Return of Quempiri community
In 1994, the Quempiri community returned to their territory after taking refuge in Natalio Sánchez since 1992, fleeing from Shining Path aggression. The return was possible thanks to the reduction of subversive activity in the region.
The Quempiri community had fled in 1992 due to Shining Path aggression. During their refuge in Natalio Sanchez, the villagers faced constant problems with the colonists and experienced 'boredom' due to forced coexistence. In 1994, after the reduction of the subversive activity in the region due to the military offensive and the organization of Defense Committees of settlers and natives, the community agreed to return to Quempiri. This return was part of the broader process of territorial recovery of native communities between 1993 and 1995, when many settlers were able to return to their territories after the defeat of the PCP-SL in the central jungle.
