Beginning in 1994, the department of Huánuco, and especially the province of Leoncio Prado in the Huallaga valley, became one of the main scenarios of the internal armed conflict during its final period. This province accounted for more than a quarter of the fatalities during the final period of violence. The conflict in this area represented a late phase of the political violence that had begun in other regions of the country in 1980. The concentration of victims in Leoncio Prado marked a geographical displacement of the conflict from its initial epicenters in Ayacucho to the Huallaga region.
