The 'mass' of the Popular Committee called 'Sello de Oro' in the town of Simariva killed the Shining Path commanders and surrendered to the Santa Rosa Military Base. The families had lived in plastic tents, exposed to the elements and without clothes for years. In the ten years of Shining Path control, around 100 children and adults had died from lack of food. 100% of the survivors suffered from anemia, many had tuberculosis, acute bronchitis and malaria. Many children, due to malnutrition, at the age of two, three years could not walk.
