Capture of Martha Cayetano Torres

Martha Cayetano Torres, political commander of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the province of San Roman in the department of Puno, was captured by combined police and army forces. She was presented to the press in Cuzco on October 6, 1993, together with 11 other Shining Path militants captured in various localities. This capture was part of a series of successful operations by counter-subversive forces and self-defense committees in the highland provinces during the pacification period. The arrest of Cayetano Torres represented a significant blow to the political structure of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the Puno region.
