Capture of Lucero Cumpa
Lucero Cumpa, who had returned from Germany in September 1992 to assume the General Command of the Northeastern Front of the MRTA, was captured by the Army in May 1993. Her capture, together with the collaboration of repentant rebels, disarticulated the attempts to restructure MRTA.
In September 1992, the MRTA National Directorate ordered Lucero Cumpa to return from Germany to assume the General Command of the Northeastern Front (FNO). When she was captured in May 1993, Antonio was left in sole command of the FNO and took refuge in the Pongo de Caynarachi due to Army harassment. The capture of Lucero Cumpa, who was head of communications, together with the help of the repentants, allowed the Army to disrupt all attempts by the MRTA to restructure itself. This capture was a significant blow to the subversive organization in the region.
