On March 28, 1993, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out one of its most spectacular actions in the department of Cuzco, trying to emulate other similar actions carried out in Ayacucho and Apurimac. The attack on the Q'enqoro prison resulted in the successful escape of 31 subversives, among PCP-Sendero Luminoso and MRTA militants. This event occurred after the capture of Abimael Guzman, in a period when the MRTA had taken the lead in subversive actions in the first months of 1993. Subsequently, on October 27, 1994, in a desperate attempt, they tried again to attack the Q'enqoro prison to free their detained militants, but were repulsed by the police.
