Confrontation in Phara

Armed confrontation between the army and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Phara that left 11 dead (8 hikers, 1 officer and 2 soldiers) and 9 hikers captured.

On January 30, 1993, an armed confrontation took place between the Peruvian army and the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the district of Phara. The combat resulted in the death of 8 hikers, an officer and two army soldiers. Subsequently, 9 additional Shining Path members were captured in the so-called Support Base of the Túpac Amaru community. This confrontation was part of the pacification period that followed the capture of Abimael Guzmán in September 1992.
