Diminishing influence of drug cartels in Tamaya and Imiria

In 1993, drug cartels decreased their influence in Tamaya and Imiria due to increased repressive actions by the Navy and the government's anti-drug policy. The presence of PCP-SL was also minimal due to military defeats and the resistance of the ADC of Puerto Alegre.

Beginning in 1993, the drug cartels significantly decreased their influence in the Tamaya River and Imiria Lake areas. This decline was the result of increased repressive actions by the Navy and the anti-drug policy promoted by the Peruvian government. By this time, the military and political presence of the PCP-SL was minimal due to its constant military defeats at the hands of the Navy, which bombed several Organized Committees and Open Popular Committees. The fierce resistance of the Puerto Alegre ADC also contributed to the weakening of both the drug traffickers and the Shining Path in the region.
