PCP-SL begins to lose strength in Alto Huallaga

Beginning in 1993, the PCP-SL began to rapidly lose strength in Alto Huallaga without disappearing completely, marking the decline of its influence that had begun in the early 1980s in the region.

Beginning in 1993, the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) began to rapidly lose strength in the Upper Huallaga region, although it has not completely disappeared to date. The influence of the PCP-SL in Alto Huallaga had followed a temporal vector that began in the early 1980s. This decline occurred in a context where the PCP-SL had achieved relative 'success' and had evidenced the collapse of the State's presence in the Upper Huallaga during that period. The loss of strength marked the beginning of the end of one of the most complex temporal dimensions of the internal war, in which a series of individual and institutional interests converged.
