Ambush in Los Frailones

PCP-SL ambush against a military and police caravan in Los Frailones, Huamachuco, during an armed strike in 1993, resulting in the death of 18 personnel (9 policemen and 9 soldiers).

During an armed strike called by the PCP-SL in 1993, the subversives carried out one of their main military actions during the entire period of violence in the region. They ambushed a combined army and police caravan in the town of Los Frailones, in Huamachuco. The attack resulted in the death of nine policemen and nine soldiers, being one of the most significant blows against the forces of law and order in the province of Sanchez Carrion. This event occurred in a context of intensified violence between 1990 and 1993, when the PCP-SL was putting pressure on the provincial centers, especially the city of Huamachuco.
