1993 National Census
The 1993 National Census documented that more than 50% of the Peruvian population was urban, with Metropolitan Lima concentrating 28.4% of the national population (6,434,323 inhabitants). The census showed the demographic transformation of the country with 38.8% of the population migrating to the capital.

Metropolitan Lima concentrated almost a third of the national population with 28.4% compared to 9.4% in 1940. The census recorded that Metropolitan Lima was home to 6,434,323 inhabitants, with 38.8% of the total metropolitan population being of migrant origin. The census also showed that the district with the largest population was San Juan de Lurigancho with 591,213 inhabitants, and that about 3.5 million people lived in young towns, representing 35% of Lima's population.
