Murder of PNP Colonel Manuel Tumba Ortega

PCP-SL assassinates PNP Colonel Manuel Tumba Ortega in Surquillo in retaliation for the capture of Abimael Guzmán

On November 5, 1992, at approximately 8:30 in the morning, PNP Colonel Manuel Tumba Ortega was killed by a special detachment of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso when he was leaving his home to buy a newspaper. The attackers 'Jeremías' (Gerardo Salinas Galarza) and 'Enrique' (Juan Gutiérrez Quispe) shot him in the back with firearms. He received eighteen gunshot wounds and died instantly. The attack was planned by the Southern Zonal of the Metropolitan Regional Committee of the PCP-SL in retaliation for his participation in the capture of Abimael Guzman.
