Huayao Massacre
PCP-SL massacred 53 people in Huayao, leaving 50 children orphaned
Between October 9 and 10, 1992, at approximately 10:00 p.m., 100 hikers, including men and women, surrounded the community of Huayao. In the early morning of October 10, they killed 53 people who were in their homes or trying to flee. The hikers used firearms, axes and explosives. They burned approximately 30 houses. Among the victims were Mariano Huamán Quispe, Agripina Lapa Quispe, Claudio Huamán Uyhua, Benita Yucra Calle, Silvia Taype, Martín Laurente and his family, Francisca Yauli Soto and her 3-year-old son, Dionicia Ignacia Quispe Huallpa and her three children. Forty-seven bodies were collected. Fifty children were left orphaned and families disintegrated.
