Capture of Martha Huatay

Martha Huatay, lawyer and leader of Socorro Popular of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso, was captured in October 1992 in Lima. Her arrest forced the subversive organization to make new changes in its structure.

Martha Huatay was a lawyer who assumed the leadership of Socorro Popular (SoPo), an organization of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso with a very complex structure that, after its militarization in 1986, came to displace the Metropolitan Committee in importance. Socorro Popular acted almost always through its 'gray' or 'front' organizations, such as the Association of Democratic Lawyers and the Committee of Relatives of Political Prisoners. Huatay assumed the leadership of SoPo after the capture of the previous leader, together with Tito Valle Travesaño and Víctor Zavala Cataño, in June 1991. His capture in October 1992 forced Socorro Popular into new but fragile organizational recompositions.
