Capture of Abimael Guzmán Reinoso and the PCP-SL leadership.

On September 12, 1992, the GEIN captured Abimael Guzmán and the leadership of the PCP-SL in Surquillo, Lima. This capture marked the end of the most violent period of the internal armed conflict in the capital and the beginning of the definitive decline of the Shining Path.

On September 12, 1992, the Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) of the DINCOTE captured Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, maximum leader of the PCP-SL, together with the party's top leadership, in a residence located in the district of Surquillo. This capture marked a decisive turning point in the internal armed conflict, since after it the actions of the PCP-SL began to gradually decrease. The climate of terror and insecurity that had been installed in the capital city changed radically after this operation. The capture was the result of intelligence work carried out by the GEIN, a special group formed in March 1990 with the explicit objective of capturing the leadership of the PCP-SL.
