Capture of Abimael Guzman Reinoso

Capture of the leader of the Shining Path PCP, Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, by the DIRCOTE on September 12, 1992 in Lima. This event led to the end of the internal armed conflict in Peru.

The capture of Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, leader of the Shining Path PCP, was carried out by the Directorate Against Terrorism (DIRCOTE) after a thorough intelligence work. This event occurred at the height of the violence in Lima, after the Tarata Street bombing on July 16, 1992. The capture of Guzman and the subversive leadership led to the end of the internal armed conflict. This event marked the beginning of a period of decline in subversive action, together with the Peace Agreement signed by Guzmán in prison and the law of repentance, which considerably curbed the subversive actions of the Shining Path PCP.
