Recapture of Victor Polay Campos

Victor Polay Campos, MRTA leader known as 'comrade Rolando', was recaptured in San Borja after escaping from Castro Castro prison in 1990. He was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Victor Polay Campos, leader of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) known by the pseudonym 'comrade Rolando', was recaptured by law enforcement officials in the district of San Borja, Lima. This capture occurred almost two years after his spectacular escape from Castro Castro prison on July 9, 1990, when he escaped along with 46 other MRTA prisoners through a tunnel. After his recapture, Polay Campos was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment under current anti-terrorist legislation. His recapture represented a significant blow to the MRTA leadership structure at a critical moment in the internal armed conflict.
