In June 1992, the Northern Zonal Committee of the PCP-SL entered into reorganization, suppressing the position of military command and reorganizing its structure into two detachments and a militia. This reorganization occurred in the context following the police intervention in the Canto Grande prison (June 6-9, 1992) and shortly before the Tarata attack (July 16, 1992). The northern zone included the districts of Comas, Carabayllo, Los Olivos and other areas in the north of Metropolitan Lima. The cadres that made up its detachments were mostly university students, but there were also workers, unemployed and street vendors.
