On January 31, 1992, Florentina Rivera Távara, a leader of the Juan Parra del Riego human settlement, was shot to death. This assassination occurred in a context of intense violence in the Junin region, where both the Shining Path PCP and the MRTA were active. The event took place in the context of a campaign of violence against social leaders and local authorities. In March of the same year, the PCP-SL continued its campaign of terror by assassinating eight people in a high school in Huancayo.
