On January 12, 1992, there was a violent confrontation between ronderos and subversives in Tarmatambo, La Merced district, Chanchamayo province. The combat resulted in the death of 8 ronderos and 5 subversives. This confrontation occurred in the context of the intensification of violence in the central jungle during 1989-1992, a period known as the "terrible years". The event was part of the strategy of organizing counter-subversive patrols promoted by the Army since 1991 to confront the PCP-SL in the province of Satipo and surrounding areas.
