In January 1992, one of the MRTA camps was located in the district of Mazamari and was destroyed by the Peruvian Army. Nine subversives were killed in the operation. This event occurred in the context of the reconstitution of the MRTA after its defeat in Molinos in 1989 and after a failed attempt to take the town of Pichanaki in December 1991. The destruction of the camp was part of the Army's counter-subversive actions in the central jungle during the most intense period of the internal armed conflict.
