Sexual abuse in Chorrillos Prison
A colonel in charge of the Chorrillos prison in 1992 conditioned prison benefits in exchange for sexual favors, forcing inmates to agree to abuse in order to obtain better prison conditions.
In the Santa Monica Penitentiary in Chorrillos, during 1992, a colonel in charge of the prison abused his power over the inmates. The colonel would take groups of women out to sing the hymn and condition prison benefits such as visits, transfers, better conditions, work material and access to lawyers in exchange for sexual favors. According to testimonies, some inmates agreed to these demands in order to obtain better prison conditions and were used sexually by the officers in charge. The testimonies indicate that these sexual abuse practices were systematic and were used as a mechanism of control and blackmail over the female prison population.
