I Meeting of Rondas del Alto Mayo

Regional meeting of peasant patrols organized by OPASM in Buenos Aires, San Martin, as part of the process of pacification and strengthening of community organization in the face of MRTA subversive violence.

The I Encuentro de Rondas del Alto Mayo was organized by OPASM (Oficina Prelatural de Acción Social de Moyobamba) and the rondas campesinas in 1992 in Buenos Aires, San Martín. This meeting was part of a series of regional meetings of peasant patrols held that year to strengthen community organization. Together with the I Encounter of Rondas del Bajo Huallaga held in Chazuta, these events were part of the pacification strategy promoted by the Catholic Church in the region. The peasant patrols had emerged as a response to MRTA violence and played an important role in the pacification process in the department of San Martin.
