Promulgation of the law creating the Sint Maarten Region

In 1992, the Fujimori government enacted the law creating the San Martin Region, in response to the constant social mobilizations promoted by FEDIP-SM. This demand had been one of the main demands of the popular struggles since 1990.

After constant social mobilizations promoted by FEDIP-SM (Frente de Defensa de los Intereses del Pueblo de San Martín), in 1992 the government of Alberto Fujimori enacted the law creating the San Martin Region. This demand had been one of the main demands during the second indefinite general strike of February and March 1990, which called for the creation of the Autonomous Region of San Martin and the repeal of the law that created Region II (La Libertad-San Martin). After the promulgation of this law, Lucas Cachay proposed the elaboration of a plan to strengthen the active presence of MRTA in civil society. The creation of this region was the result of years of popular struggle and mobilizations seeking decentralization and regional autonomy.
