In 1992, union leader Donato Bernal was murdered in La Oroya. His body was found dead near the Club Peruano neighborhood with a bullet in his head. This assassination occurred in a context of violence against union leaders in the mining region, where both the PCP-SL and the forces of law and order carried out actions against labor leaders. The crime took place in the midst of the process of weakening the mining unions and shortly before the beginning of the privatization of Centromín Perú in 1993.
