Murder of Orlando Tapia and Santiago Jau in Barranca

In 1992, PCP-SL militants assassinated Orlando Tapia, a provincial mayoral candidate for Acción Popular, and Santiago Jau, owner of Radio Fortaleza, in Barranca, as part of their strategy of selective assassinations against authorities and public figures.

In 1992, Shining Path militants assassinated in Barranca the provincial mayoral candidate Orlando Tapia, who belonged to the Popular Action party. In the same event, Santiago Jau, owner of Radio Fortaleza, was assassinated. These selective assassinations were part of the PCP-SL strategy of attacking political authorities and public figures in the coastal provinces. The crimes occurred in the context of the Shining Path offensive concentrated in the coastal provinces since 1992, the year of Abimael Guzmán's capture.
