Between December 1991 and January 1992, police and military forces launched a counter-offensive that succeeded in dismantling the MRTA column in the department of Cuzco. This operation took place after the MRTA made its appearance in the department by attacking the Ollantaytambo police post in the province of Urubamba on April 3, 1991. The counteroffensive was successful in neutralizing MRTA operations in the Cuzco region during this period.
