Fujimori's speech against human rights organizations

In September 1991, President Fujimori described human rights organizations as "useful fools" of the subversion, severely questioning their work in the framework of his new anti-subversive policy.

President Alberto Fujimori gave a speech in September 1991 describing human rights organizations as "useful fools" of the subversion. Days later, on Navy Day (September 24), the President spoke of the new anti-subversive policy and severely questioned "the terrorists [sic] infiltrated in pseudo humanitarian and human rights organizations". This speech marked a point of direct confrontation between the government and human rights organizations. The context included previous tensions, such as the August meeting between military chiefs and representatives of human rights organizations, and the suspension of U.S. military aid requested by Senator Edward Kennedy in response to allegations of human rights violations attributed to Peruvian military personnel.
