A group of Shining Path guerrillas assassinated two Polish Franciscan priests, Michel Tomaszek and Zbigniew Strzalkowski, in Pariacoto, Ancash. Shining Path claimed these murders as a blow to the old order, accusing the priests of being agents of imperialism in disguise. The priests worked in development projects with peasant communities. This crime was widely condemned nationally and internationally.
