The U.S. government suspended military aid to Peru at the request of Senator Edward Kennedy. The temporary suspension of military aid credits was demanded in response to allegations of human rights violations attributed to Peruvian military personnel. This measure took place in a context of growing international concern about the human rights situation in the country. In October of the same year, the U.S. Congress lifted the suspension of military and economic aid related to the fight against drugs, but left without effect a package of 10 million dollars destined to equip three battalions of the Peruvian Army in the Alto Huallaga.
