State of emergency lifted in Sint Maarten

The Peruvian government lifted the state of emergency in the department of San Martin in August 1991. This measure took place in a context of generalized political violence in the country.

In August 1991, the Executive Branch lifted the state of emergency that had been declared in the department of San Martin. This measure took place in a context where the government had been extending states of emergency in various regions of the country due to political violence. The lifting of the state of emergency in San Martin contrasts with the situation in other areas of the country where these exceptional measures were maintained or extended. In February of the same year, a popular consultation had been held in Sint Maarten, the unofficial result of which assigned a majority to the option of forming an autonomous region.
