Murder of Juana Lopez

Juana López, a popular leader, was assassinated in Callao in August 1991 during the PCP-Sendero Luminoso offensive against leaders of grassroots organizations. Her death was part of a systematic campaign of violence against women leaders.

Juana López was assassinated in Callao in August 1991, in the context of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso offensive against leaders of grassroots organizations. Her murder occurred in the midst of a wave of violence against women leaders that intensified in mid-1991. This crime was part of a series of murders and threats against popular leaders that also included the murder of Doraliza Espejo in San Juan de Lurigancho in September of the same year. The violence against these leaders culminated with the assassination of María Elena Moyano in February 1992.
