Peruvian Elections of 1978
During the government of General Morales Bermúdez, Peru experienced significant political activity from leftist groups, despite their fragmentation. The elections of 1978 saw the formation of alliances like the Unidad Democrático Popular (UDP) as leftist groups sought to unify and participate in the electoral process. Despite a boycott from Maoist factions like the PCP-SL, the leftist parties managed to secure a majority of votes in the Ayacucho region, highlighting their influence in certain provinces.
Durante la «segunda fase» del gobierno militar del General Morales Bermúdez se convocó a elecciones nacionales. La mayor parte de la izquierda, a pesar de estar fragmentada y con militancia poco acostumbrada a procesos electorales, decidió participar formando alianzas como la Unidad Democrático Popular (UDP). Sin embargo, el espectro maoísta, incluyendo el PCP-SL, decidió boicotear el proceso electoral promoviendo el ausentismo. En Ayacucho, la participación electoral fue mayoritaria a pesar del boicot, registrando un ausentismo regional del 19.46% frente a un 16.3% nacional, y las agrupaciones de izquierda obtuvieron la mayoría de votos en el departamento.
