Assassination of the provincial mayor of San Antonio de Putina

On July 17, 1991, the provincial mayor of San Antonio de Putina was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This assassination was part of a series of violent actions perpetrated by PCP-SL urban annihilation commandos in Puno during 1991. The attack against this municipal authority took place in a context of an upsurge of subversive violence in the region, especially directed against local authorities, political and social leaders. This assassination occurred just two months after the murder of Porfirio Suni, a peasant leader, and was followed by other attacks against public officials in the region.
