Clash between PCP-SL and law enforcement forces in Naranjillo
Clash in Naranjillo left more than 40 dead among hikers and civilians and 5 soldiers
The PCP-SL attempted an attack on the city of Tingo Maria using Naranjillo as a base. Approximately 500 well-armed subversives entered from 11:00 p.m. on the 15th, but were intercepted by the Peruvian army that had been alerted by a rondero. A fierce confrontation ensued that lasted until 9:00 a.m., leaving more than 40 bodies among Shining Path members and civilians, while five soldiers were killed. On the sixth day the villagers had to incinerate 14 abandoned bodies.
