Huanta and Huamanga Protests of 1969
In June 1969, a decree by the Peruvian military government aimed at reducing free education sparked widespread protests in the cities of Huanta and Huamanga. The demonstrations, which lasted almost the entire month, involved large segments of the population and regional social organizations, leading to violent clashes with police and resulting in numerous casualties and arrests. This event highlighted the organizational capacity of regional society, including leftist groups, and marked a significant moment of conflict between regional interests and the central government.
En junio de 1969, un decreto del gobierno militar intentando recortar la gratuidad de la enseñanza escolar generó un fuerte movimiento de rechazo en las ciudades de Huanta y Huamanga, prolongándose durante casi todo el mes. El movimiento involucró vastos sectores de la población y organizaciones sociales regionales, quienes se enfrentaron a la represión policial con un considerable saldo de muertos, heridos y detenidos. Este hecho permitió observar el nivel de organización de los distintos sectores de la sociedad regional, incluyendo grupos de izquierda, y quedó registrado en la memoria histórica regional como un hito importante del enfrentamiento entre los intereses regionales y el estado central.
