On July 4, 1991, a military patrol entered the community of Santa Barbara and kidnapped a group of community members. According to testimonies gathered by the CVR, the kidnapped community members were later dynamited in the Misteriosa mine. This fact represents one of the cases of human rights violations committed by the forces of law and order in the province of Huancavelica. The community of Santa Barbara had previously been affected by violence, including an incident in 1985 when around 45 members of the PCP-SL were killed in a confrontation with military patrols near the community, and another in 1987 when ten villagers were killed accused of being 'snitches'.
