Murder of Alejandro Magno Gómez

The PCP-SL assassinated Alejandro Magno Gomez, prefect of Villa El Salvador and member of Cambio 90, on June 23, 1991. This was the first act of a Shining Path strategy to eliminate local authorities and create a power vacuum in the district.

On June 23, 1991, the PCP-SL assassinated Alejandro Magno Gómez, prefect of the district of Villa El Salvador and member of Cambio 90, the ruling party. This assassination marked the first act of an escalation of violence in the framework of the Shining Path strategy of creating a power vacuum by intimidating and eliminating local authorities and leaders. The crime took place in mid-1991, when district leaders realized that the PCP-SL had clear political intentions to dismantle the most important social organizations and destroy the Villa El Salvador project.
