Julio detained and tortured in police operation

Julio's detention and torture due to ethno-social profile considered 'ideal hiker'.

On June 19, 1991, a day commemorated as an important date by Sendero Luminoso, an attack took place that led to a police operation. Julio, a psychology student at San Marcos and a professor, was arrested as a suspect along with other people. In the Mirones police station they were tortured: their fingers were stepped on, they played with weapons, they were beaten and walked on top of them. Later he was transferred to other police stations where he was mistreated and threatened with death. The policemen told him that his background was 'ideal to be a member of Sendero Luminoso': son of Ayacucho parents, he spoke Quechua, studied in San Marcos and lived in Callao.
