Massacre in La Merced
On June 7, 1991, PCP-Sendero Luminoso militants assassinated 9 people in La Merced, Churcampa, including the district mayor Prospero Valencia Porras and his family. It was one of the last major actions of the PCP-SL in the province.
On June 7, 1991, a contingent of subversives from the PCP-Sendero Luminoso entered the district of La Merced and carried out a massacre against local authorities and villagers. The victims were Prospero Valencia Porras (district mayor) and his wife Rufina Guevara; Oswaldo Porras Valencia and his wife Juana Santos Mancco; German Porras Condor; Fortunata Valencia Porras and her son Jose Rodriguez Valencia; Serapio Cajamarca Roque; and Constantino Moreno Ortiz. This was one of the last major actions committed by the subversives in the province of Churcampa. The attack was part of the PCP-SL's strategy of selective assassinations against authorities and alleged collaborators of the forces of law and order.
