Case of Ernesto Rafael Castillo Páez
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled that the Peruvian state was obligated to pay reparations amounting to $245,021.80 to the family of Ernesto Rafael Castillo Páez. The court also mandated that Peru investigate the events leading to his disappearance, identify and punish those responsible, and ensure compliance with these obligations. A subsequent resolution in 2002 reiterated the need for Peru to report on the progress of these investigations.
La Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos declaró que el Estado peruano violó derechos consagrados en la Convención Americana al no respetar los derechos de Ernesto Rafael Castillo Páez, quien fue secuestrado y desaparecido por la Policía Nacional del Perú. La Corte ordenó al Estado investigar los hechos, identificar y sancionar a los responsables, y reparar las consecuencias de las violaciones indemnizando a los familiares de la víctima. En noviembre de 1998, la Corte fijó el monto de reparaciones en USD $245,021.80 y reiteró la obligación de investigar el caso. Posteriormente, en 2002, emitió una resolución de cumplimiento requiriendo al Estado presentar informes detallados sobre el avance de las investigaciones.
