On May 22, 1991, a Shining Path column raided Huasahuasi, a district in the province of Tarma. In this attack, four people were killed: the nun Irene McCormack, the community president Pedro Pando, the former deputy mayor Alfredo Morales and the leader Agustín Vento. This event was part of the strategy of "selective annihilations" that the PCP-Sendero Luminoso executed against local authorities and community leaders in the central region of Peru. The assassination of the foreign nun and local authorities was part of the terror campaign implemented by the Shining Path to eliminate any form of communal organization that was not under their control.
