Murder of Porfirio Suni Quispe

Porfirio Suni Quispe, professor, peasant leader and IU representative in the regional government, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Juliaca on May 14, 1991. He had previously been arrested and tortured in 1988, unjustly accused of participating in a Shining Path attack.

Porfirio Suni Quispe, professor, peasant leader and representative of the United Left (IU) in the government of the José Carlos Mariátegui Region, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Juliaca on May 14, 1991. Previously, on May 5, 1988, Suni had been arrested and tortured, falsely accused of participating in a PCP-SL attack against the SAIS Picotani in Crucero, Sandia province, where 6 civil guards and a justice of the peace were killed. His assassination was part of the Shining Path's strategy of eliminating authorities and leftist political leaders who did not align themselves with their armed project. The crime occurred during a period of intense political violence in Puno, where the PCP-SL directed its attacks against state representatives and social leaders.
