Attack against Augusto Zúñiga Paz

On March 15, 1991, Augusto Zúñiga Paz, a COMISEDH lawyer and human rights defender, suffered a letter bomb attack that amputated his left forearm. The attack generated a political crisis that led to the change of the Minister of the Interior.

Augusto Zúñiga Paz, lawyer for the Human Rights Commission (COMISEDH) and sponsor of the disappeared student Ernesto Castillo Páez, was the victim of a letter bomb attack. The attack caused the amputation of his left forearm. This attack occurred in a context of political violence and was one of the events that led opposition sectors to demand the resignation of the Minister of the Interior, General EP (r) Adolfo Alvarado Fournier. The attack against the legal advisor of COMISEDH, together with the escape of the subversive Lucero Cumpa Miranda, generated a crisis that resulted in the replacement of the Minister of the Interior by General EP (r) Victor Malca Villanueva.
