Rescue of Lucero Cumpa Miranda by the MRTA

On March 11, 1991, an MRTA commando rescued the leader Lucero Cumpa Miranda while she was being transferred to the Judicial Power in a police van in Lima. This violent action provoked the resignation of the Minister of the Interior days later.

On March 11, 1991, an MRTA commando carried out one of the most impressive and violent actions in Lima to rescue Lucero Cumpa Miranda. The MRTA leader was being transferred to the Judicial Power along with Nelly Evans Risco, a member of the PCP-SL, in a truck belonging to the Technical Police of Peru when she was rescued. Lucero Cumpa Miranda had been captured again by members of the DIRCOTE in the Lima district of Magdalena del Mar in March of the same year. This rescue, together with the attack on COMISEDH legal advisor Augusto Zuñiga Paz, provoked several sectors of the opposition to demand the resignation of the Minister of the Interior, General EP (r) Adolfo Alvarado Fournier, who was replaced by General EP (r) Victor Malca Villanueva on March 15.
