Rescue of Lucero Cumpa

On March 11, 1991, an MRTA commando violently rescued its leader Lucero Cumpa while she was being transferred to the judiciary in a police van in Lima. The action was catalogued as one of the most impressive and violent carried out by the MRTA in the capital.

Lucero Cumpa, leader of the MRTA, was recaptured in March 1991 by members of the DINCOTE in the Lima district of Magdalena del Mar. On March 11, in one of the most impressive and violent actions carried out by an MRTA commando in Lima, Lucero Cumpa was rescued while being transferred to the judiciary along with hiker Nelly Evans in a truck belonging to the Peruvian Technical Police. This operation demonstrated the operational capacity of the MRTA in the capital and their determination to free their captured leaders.
